Political Correctness or Freedom of Speech Essay - 1475 Words

The term political correctness (PC) has infringed on our freedom of speech by assuming that the populace is too ignorant to realize what appropriate speech is. This term is now as common in our society as the term, ‘freedom of speech’. It is incomprehensible how these two words have had such an effect on the manner in which our society communicates. The trend casts a negative view on our society by letting political views determine what is appropriate in our social sector. Political correctness, as applied in today’s society, seeks to control freedom of speech and poses a true danger to a free society. The First Amendment’s focus is the protection of our right to express our thoughts through speech, whether written or verbal. Hood, Texas, when a terrorist was allowed to be p laced a in a position to attack. The results were 30 persons wounded and 13 killed. The Defense Department’s review of the incident found that the doctors overseeing the terrorist shooter Major Nidal Hasan’s, medical training repeatedly voiced their concerns over his strident views on Islam and inappropriate behavior. However, they continued to give him positive performance evaluations and kept him moving up through the ranks. In a statement made by Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates, commented on the findings of the first enquiry after the incident: â€Å"Indeed, troubling information about individuals is often withheld or filed discreetly away instead of being shared.† The inquiry showed the leaders who continued to accept and promote Hasan during his Army career were not blind to what they saw in front of them. We are given multiple circumstances in the book where Dewey Dell’s life is noticeably described in a negative way, not as a person, but rather how bad of a situation she is in. She is an impregnated seventeen-year-old girl who is unable to find proper treatment to relieve her of a child she doesn’t want. While she is dealing with her own catastrophic incident she is also dealing with the numerous other problems her family is unsuccessfully dealing with. Due to the rest of the Bundren family’s understandably more serious dilemmas taking priority over Dewey Dell’s, she is forced to put off her own extremely urgent predicament. We learn about Dewey Dell’s pregnancy very early on in the book, and that she isn’t the most willing carrier of the child.
